As a Business owner how can I protect my wife and kids

A BUSINESS OWNER:
Q. “A colleague of mine passed away suddenly and I had the opportunity to see first-hand the financial and emotional hardship he and his family are dealing with on an on-going basis because he had no plan for the unexpected events. How can I protect my wife and kids in case something happens to me?
It is understandable that as the provider and protector of your family, you want to ensure that they financially and emotionally secure.  Have a succession plan for your business and leave your personal life in order.  Here are the top 10 tips to protect you, your spouse and family in case of any tragedy--
1-      Short term disability and long term disability policies will ensure that you have sufficient income to provide assistance to you and your family for living expenses, prescriptions, tests or treatments.
2-      A medical care policy that will care for you or a loved one in case of extreme disability, dementia, or sickness is very different than a disability policy. It will provide you with the medical attention, housing or care-aids when required.
3-      A power of attorney with delegation to a family member or trusted advisor will allow temporary decision-making on your behalf a simpler process.
4-      A current last will and testament, a living will and a medical directive are all important so that your wishes are clear to family, healthcare providers and legal counsel.  If you don’t have these, do it now.
5-      Keep a current contact list for your lawyers, accountants, bankers, consultants, agents, advisors, managers, friends and associations.
6-      Keep a copy of your birth and marriage certificates on file and easily accessible.  They may be needed when dealing with government agencies and when applying for transfer of benefits to your spouse.
7-      Consider life insurance that doesn't change in frequency, payment or benefit during your lifetime. That way it will be with you and your family forever without having to pay more, or lose it.
8-      Consider creating trusts for your family members. This can be a reliable income stream for family members without it being taxed as income.  Check with your accountant or financial planner on the current regulations.
9-      Organize personal bills and make notations for others that are left behind since so many bills are now e-statements.

10-   Keep a register (list and copies) of all of the aforementioned documents and information PLUS the registered owners of your personal assets such as your accounts, investments, property, safety deposit box, and vehicles in one place that is easy to find by your family.

Is the I-cloud safe to use?

DAY 36 TIP OF THE DAY - 60 DAY CHALLENGE OFFER

Is the I-Cloud safe for us to use on a regular basis?
Mar 8 -2013

Is the I-CLOUD safe to use? Well- we asked The Economic Crime Unit at the Surrey Board of Trade Business Fraud Awareness Meeting
They wouldn't use it for any information that you would need to retrieve or that could be vital documentation that is necessary.
The I-Cloud needs to be within Canada if it's used because it is very difficult for the Crime Unit to help you out with any loss, damage or misuse of your information if it's in another Country.
Backup on a server that is in Canada and a reputable company that has less chance of shutting down in which you would not have access to your information.

The other option is to have your paycheck covered with disability insurance with injury and sickness covered in that. Of course you can reduce the premium amounts by starting the disability after a longer waiting period and having a smaller savings account to cover you for the difference. So you can be covered with in effect 0 day waiting period and extending to 5 year disability plan or age 65. That's also an idea!

Do you dread the Cancer Word?

DAY 8 TIP OF THE DAY - 60 DAY CHALLENGE OFFER
THE CANCER WORD

Feb 8-2013
What happens if you were to hear the dreaded cancer word? What can we do in our lives to be better prepared for our loss of income, our family emotional stress, and our life changes? Check it out.
It has a huge impact not just financially on the family but the complete picture of jobs, career, happiness, physical abilities, and children come into play.
What can help the situation is to be putting some protection into place so that you can afford to some different things when you have to. Purchase expensive pills, or insulin. Purchase expensive treatments, move to a certain city where they have a treatment that will help you and so on.  The kids of protection that are available to us now, are fantastic! You can have protection with some coverage to ensure that you will have some money to look after loss of income, mortgage or bill payments, and take that stress out of the picture. You can pay into the coverage and then ask to have all your premiums back if you don't use it!  So, why not, does that cost anything? Some years packing away the premiums to ensure you have a sense of certainty. That's priceless!

What do I have in Employer Benefits?

DAY 6 ~TIP OF THE DAY - 60 DAY CHALLENGE OFFER
EMPLOYER BENEFITS
Feb 6-2013

OUR LIFE INSURANCE- are we using life insurance solely on our Group benefit package from work? Do we know what that looks like?
Employer benefits or Group Benefits are owned by the Employer. The Employer can change it, cancel it or alter it at anytime!
They usually have maximum on the plans for employees, and have restrictions based on your health for any more coverage. It's not flexible, even though they say they are. They are so expensive after retiring that it is definitely not transferable.
So, get your own coverage that is owned by yourself and is flexible.

What about your Home insurance?

60 DAY CHALLENGE
DAY 3~ TIP OF THE DAY -
YOUR HOME INSURANCE!
Feb 3 - 2013
Do you know what you condo insurance looks like? Do you know what your house insurance looks like?
We always recommend that you review renewals every year because your furniture or property changes every year. Your property value, buildings and jewellery, tools, Artwork, etc need to be adjusted. Do you have any recent photos of anything included in your coverage or receipts? During the Kelowna fire there were hundreds of property owners trying to change their property insurance and they couldn't do or change anything on it even though it was only in the area.

Also Day 4 Tip we will review condo insurance.
